Chateau LEOVILLE POYFERRE 1989

I was in the Medoc area day before yesterday with Didier Cuvelier owner of the cru classé Leoville poyferre second classified growth of Saint Julien.
Poyferre is definitively a rising star. The vineyards, the cellars have been deeply renovated on the last 15 years.
The quality level of the wine is now very high and consistant.
We have been having lunch at the "LION D'OR" an auberge restaurant owned by Monsieur Barbier.
This restaurant handle a private cellar for each cru classé owner.
Didier took for us a 1989 vintage.
The cork was not fantastic. Nice colour with already some brown reflet.
At the begining we had a nice fresh minthy nose . Then the mouth came nicely but was not very powerfull.
We thought it was because of the cork but 5 mn later the wine came back in our glasses with a lot of red fruit like raspberry, cutter and blackcurrent with a touch of vanilia. The wine remains young and alive with a good acidity, a good length in the mouth and a spicy finish.
If you are lucky enough to have a bottle of the 1989 dont hesitate to put it in a carafe 15 minutes before serving it to your friends.

Foie de veau et crepes suzettes.
